Our area should get a break in April showers Friday just long enough to fit in another spring tradition, the first day of the Major League Baseball season in the Bronx.
The National Weather Service on Thursday afternoon predicted rain showers for Friday night before 11 p.m. and possible thunderstorms and showers after 11 p.m. Winds were expected to gust as high as 31 mph and the chance of precipitation was 100%.
But the Yankees, after having postponed their opening game from Thursday to Friday because of the prospect of rain, are expected to begin play at 1:05 p.m. Friday under mostly sunny skies.
Long Island should have a high temperature Friday of about 58 degrees, and a southwest wind of 9 to 13 mph. The normal high for the date in Islip is 55 degrees.
Then for Friday night, scattered showers are in the forecast, but only after 2 a.m. The chance of precipitation is 30%. The low temperature should be about 44 degrees.
Saturday will have scattered showers, mainly before 2 p.m., and then be partly sunny, with a high near 55 degrees. The chance of precipitation is again 30%
Sunday is looking to be mostly sunny with a high near 52 degrees.
The first three days of the new workweek also are expected to be pleasant with sunny to partly sunny skies. The high temperatures will range from about 57 degrees Monday to the low 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the weather service.
