Weather service warns of brushfire spread risk
Even though it rained on most of Long Island on Thursday, there remains a threat of spreading brushfires, the National Weather Service said.
In a special weather statement released Friday, the Upton-based service warned residents of Suffolk and Nassau counties that smaller wildland fuels, including grasses and brush, remain very dry.
Should ignition occur, a windy and dry air mass could enhance brushfire spread, the special weather statement said.
The combination of low humidity and wind gusts of up to 30 mph, along with the dry landscape, contribute to ideal conditions.
The forecast for most of the weekend calls for clear, sunny skies and more dry conditions, the service said.
