Snow flurries, below-freezing wind chill forecast for the week

Long Islanders who took out their big sweaters and parkas for Saturday’s snow may want to dry them off in time for possible flurries and below-freezing wind chills this week.

Snow could return Monday and Tuesday, and wind chills will make Monday and Wednesday feel very cold, said Jay Engle, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton.

While temperatures will hit a high around 40 degrees Monday, it will feel 20 degrees colder, Engle said of the expected wind chill.

With a 30 percent chance of scattered snow showers, flurries could fall between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. Monday without accumulation.

“They’re not expecting it to be something hard enough to cause major issues on the road,” Engle said, noting the agency has not issued any road advisories.

The rest of the day Monday will be mostly cloudy. A mix of snow and rain could fall around 2 a.m. Tuesday and turn into “just plain rain through the morning” after daybreak, he said.

Tuesday will have high temperatures in the upper 40s before “the coldest air of the season” hits Long Island on Wednesday, Engle said.

Low temperatures will be in the 20s, but wind chill on Wednesday morning will make it feel like 10 degrees, he said.

“We’re going to struggle to hit freezing on Wednesday,” Engle said.

The normal for this time of year is a high of 45 and a low of 30.

Some snow could return Thursday, when forecasts call for cloudy with a chance of flurries. The high will again be 30 degrees and a low of 20 is forecast.

A mostly cloudy day will open the weekend on Friday, when there’s another chance of flurries. The high is forecast to be 36 degrees and the low 24.
