Long Island weather: Warm-up this weekend, but rain as well

How about a warm-up to around 50 degrees for the weekend?

Ah, but along with that comes rain for much of Saturday and pretty much all of Sunday, forecasters say.

After Friday’s increasingly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-30s — feeling cooler with wind chill — there’s “potential for a widespread 1- to 2-inch rainfall event Saturday afternoon through Sunday night, as a slow-moving frontal system moves through the region,” the National Weather Service said. Those higher rainfall amounts would mean “potential for minor poor-drainage flooding.”

That’s as Saturday was looking to warm up to the high 40s on Long Island, and Sunday, potentially, the low 50s, said Nelson Vaz, weather service meteorologist, as of the late afternoon Thursday forecast.

As for precipitation, some light rain showers could develop as early as Saturday morning, but rain was more likely later in the afternoon, with the “most concentrated” stretch from Saturday night through the day Sunday, Vaz said. Rain could also linger into the early hours of Monday.

The system is “a slow mover,” said weather service meteorologist Carlie Buccola, so “pretty much the whole weekend will be rainy.”

But also warmer than the normal high of 40 degrees.
