Drivers are urged to “use extra caution” Tuesday night with icy conditions expected due to refreezing, the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures began the day in the low 30s and warmed up into the low 40s, but the thermometer is expected to drop into the 20s by 6 or 7 p.m., forecasters said.

Overnight lows will be in the teens to lower 20s, the weather service said, posing the risk of icy conditions again for the morning commute.

Arctic air clung to Long Island for almost two weeks before moving out Sunday night, and 13 straight days of subfreezing temperatures ended Monday when the reading crept up to 35 degrees, according to weather service data.

Temperatures Wednesday will hit a high in the mid 30s and by Thursday it will be in the mid to upper 40s, the weather service said.

Rain could move in Thursday night and continue into Friday as fog develops, the weather service said. The high Friday will be in the mid-50s, the weather service said.

“Rainfall totals could approach 1 to 2 inches in some spots leading to localized flooding,” News 12 Long Island meteorologist Pat Cavlin said.

An inch more of rain is possible Saturday, and more flooding may occur, “especially with melting snow,” he said.
