Long Island weather: Gusty winds, rain, then colder temps

Along with gusty winds, Long Islanders can expect continuing off-and-on light showers Tuesday evening, giving way to steadier rain later at night, forecasters say.

Winds from the south were forecast to bring gusts at night of up to 39 mph, the National Weather Service said.

Wednesday morning could see a few showers, but skies were expected to clear, even allowing for some afternoon sunshine, the weather service said. The day is expected to see temperatures hold fairly steady in the mid to upper 40s, said Jay Engle, weather service meteorologist in Upton, with overnight lows dipping to around 30 degrees.

Cooler temperatures then start becoming the story, as a weather pattern change brings “colder weather and a chance for some snow” into the weekend, said Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist.

Thursday was forecast to see sunny skies and temperatures heading up to the mid to upper 40s, with 46 the normal high for the day, with overnight lows dipping to the upper 20s.

Friday – and the weekend days – were looking to warm up only to around 39 or 40 degrees during the day, the weather service said, cooling down to around 27 degrees overnight.

The weather service was also calling for chances of snow or snow showers, with specifics, such as timing and amounts, yet to be pinned down as of the late Tuesday afternoon forecast, Engle said.

At that time, Friday night into Saturday morning looked to have the best chance to see some flakes fly, though that would be subject to change.
