Long Island weather: Temperature may reach 80 Wednesday

Temperatures Wednesday may be looking to crack 80 degrees on Long Island, but forecasters point also to expectations for elevated ozone levels in outdoor air, which could have negative health effects.

An air quality alert was issued for 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. with the state health department advising people to “consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity.” Those who could be particularly impacted are “the very young and those with pre-existing respiratory problems.”

Wednesday, bringing sunny skies, was forecast to warm up to around 80 degrees at Long Island MacArthur Airport — that’s close to 20 degrees above normal for the day, the National Weather Service said. Thursday, then, looks to warm up to the upper 70s.

“Noticeably cooler conditions are expected along the immediate coast, including the Twin Forks,” where around 70 to the lower 70s can be expected, the weather service said in its regional summary.

Thursday night brings a slight chance of showers, as does Friday night, the weather service said.
