Long Island weather: Warming trend continues into the weekend

Looking to week’s end, we get a two-day warm-up in the 60s and 70s, then a cool-down on Sunday to the mid-40s, forecasters say.

Such is the nature of April — a transitional month between winter’s cold and spring’s rising temperatures that “typically sees warm-ups followed by a shot of colder air,” said Joe Pollina, National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.

After Wednesday’s sunny skies and highs around the upper 40s to mid-50s, “a warm-up begins Thursday with an increasing southerly flow” and temperatures rising to the mid-to-upper 50s, the weather service said.

Then, make way for the upper 60s and low 70s Friday and Saturday, with those cooler temperatures expected the farther south and east you go on the Island.

Friday is to be partly sunny — with sunny skies for Saturday, which gives rise to this suggestion from Rich Hoffman, News 12 Long Island meteorologist: “Don’t forget the sunscreen,” as the angle of the sun “this time of year is similar to that of the end of August.”

Then, back we go Sunday down to the mid-40s, with chances of rain in the picture. In fact, the weather service said, there’s potential from Sunday night to Monday night for “periods of heavy rain capable of causing” water buildup in low-lying, flood-prone areas.
