Long Island weather: Beware of icy conditions

Wednesday’s snowfall on Long Island didn’t amount to much but falling temperatures could create slippery headaches for the Thursday morning commute.

National Weather Service meteorologist Joe Pollina said most places on Long Island saw only a trace to a dusting. But with the entire tristate area at or below freezing by the end of Wednesday’s evening rush, the weather service warned of icy conditions.

Pollina said that “standing water will freeze through the night leading to slippery roads and walkways that have not been treated.” And Wednesday night, the weather service put out a warning about black ice conditions on roadways.

Overnight lows were expected to be in the low 20s, forecasters said.

It will be sunny Thursday and mostly sunny Friday with the high temperature both days in the mid to upper 30s, the weather service said. Then, a warming trend is predicted with mostly sunny conditions Saturday and Sunday and highs in the mid-40s, the weather service said.
