Long Island forecast: Rain Wednesday, sunny but chilly Thursday

Long Islanders heading home Wednesday evening should prepare for some rainy conditions, as precipitation is expected to wrap up later at night, forecasters say.

The rain is likely to taper off between 8 and 9 p.m., with potential for it to end as a spurt of snow, said Jay Engle, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.

There could be some icy spots on untreated surfaces overnight into Thursday morning, he said.

Thursday brings sunny skies and chilly winds to Long Island, forecasters say, with little chance of precipitation — at least not until the weekend.

Temperatures head up to around 30 degrees Thursday, feeling colder thanks to winds from the northwest and associated wind chill, the National Weather Service said.

Friday was looking to be mostly cloudy, warming up to the mid-30s.

Then, with temperatures heading up to the mid-40s, Saturday was looking at a 40 percent chance of rain starting in the afternoon. Rain is likely overnight Saturday into Sunday, the weather service said.

Snow was not expected to be in the picture, as temperatures were forecast to be well above normal. Early Sunday morning should see lows in the upper 30s, with the day then warming up to around the mid- to upper 40s. The normal low would be 25 degrees, and the high 39 to 40 degrees.
