Long Island weather: Sunday could bring rain, possibly snow

The sun might elude Long Islanders until Wednesday, as rain and possibly snow could arrive Sunday — and stick around.
Rain probably will start early Sunday, and continue to fall until about noon, according to the National Weather Service’s website.
“Chances are it will sort of slowly decrease throughout the day, but there still could be some rain in the late afternoon,” Joe Pollina, weather service forecaster, said by telephone.
A tenth to a quarter of an inch of rain could fall.
Tuesday’s forecast includes a 50 percent chance of snow — but only about an inch or so, Pollina said.
The daytime low of just above freezing will be followed by a nighttime low of just about 18, the service said.
Wednesday’s sunny skies will help the high reach nearly 32; the nighttime low should be around 25, the service said.
While Thursday should be at least partly sunny, the experts see another chance of rain and snow falling that night, when the low will hover near 33.
More rain and snow look probable Friday, with a daytime high of about 41 — and a much colder nighttime low of 22.
The weekend should get off to a sunny start, the weather service said, predicting a mostly sunny Saturday with a high just below freezing.
