Long Islanders could be lookin’ out on the morning rain, both on Sunday and possibly Monday.

“This would be a good weekend to stay inside,” said Faye Marrone, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton.

Just over two inches of rain could fall between Saturday afternoon, when the showers began, and not long after midnight on Sunday, when they should end, the weather service said. Rain on Sunday could be heavy at times.

Monday has a 20 percent chance of rain before 1 p.m., it said.

So far this month, Long Island has had about 1 1⁄3 inches more rain than usual, though Marrone said the weather service cannot yet predict whether this will be a particularly rainy February.

While Saturday’s high temperature of 52 in Islip was just two degrees below the 2001 record and Sunday’s high should be around 49 degrees, a fleeting cold front will lower Monday night’s thermometer to 27, the weather service said.

Sunny skies are expected for Tuesday, with a high of 38; its cooler nighttime temperature means there is a chance of snow.

A partly sunny Wednesday, with a high of 48, will be followed by what could be another damp day.

There is a 30 percent chance of rain Thursday.

The sun reappears on Friday, but the clouds return at night, and Saturday could be mostly cloudy, the weather service said.
