Saturday night will be a cold one, with temperatures falling below freezing, followed by a rainy Super Bowl Sunday, forecasters said.

Clouds will roll in Saturday night and the temperature will fall to about 24 degrees, forecasters said. Winds will blow from the southwest at 15 miles per hour.

“It’ll be in the 20s early tonight, but as the night goes on we’re expecting those temperatures to start rising toward the freezing mark,” said Nelson Vaz, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Upton. “Then on Sunday, late morning into the early afternoon, that’s when we expect rain to start developing.”

Vaz said there may be some sleet to start things off in the late morning and early afternoon, but it will turn over to rain for the remainder of the day, with as much as an inch falling. The high for the day will be near 45 degrees, the weather service said.

In the evening, wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph coming from the south are expected. Temperatures will be in the lower to mid 40s in the evening for most of the area Sunday.

By midnight on Super Bowl Sunday the rain is expected to end. Cooler, drier air will come in Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures back into the 30s for highs, Vaz said.
