The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Nassau County and western Suffolk County until 9 p.m.
The bulletin said a line of severe thunderstorms was moving east at 40 mph.
Hazards include possible penny-sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph, the alert said.
According to the alert, storms will hit Commack and Deer Park around 8:35, Brentwood and Babylon around 8:40, and Islip and Hauppauge around 8:45.
Once the storms clear out, Sunday should turn sunny and hot, with a high around 86. Monday will be significantly cooler, with a high in the upper 70s, forecasters say.
An air quality health advisory is in place Saturday until 11 p.m. for the region, including New York City, because levels of ozone, a key ingredient in smog, are expected to meet or exceed an air quality index value of 100. Levels above 100 can lead to health impacts for sensitive groups, especially people with cardiovascular or respiratory disease, young children and the elderly, or people who exercise or work outdoors.
Air quality on Sunday is expected to improve markedly. The state's Department of Environmental Conservation on Saturday afternoon noted that the air quality index will decrease to 41, well within the "good" category, the index's topmost.
Rip current risk remained high for Saturday on the Island, the National Weather Service warned. High risk means that life-threatening rip currents are likely for anyone entering the surf.
