A rainy Thursday morning commute is in store for Long Island

Plan for a wet and slower commute Thursday morning, as forecasters are expecting an average half-an-inch to an inch of rain starting early Thursday into Friday morning.

While that may be preceded by a sprinkle or two later Wednesday, steadier widespread rain is forecast to start after midnight, tapering off Thursday afternoon and followed by "spotty rainfall here and there," said Pete Wichrowski, National Weather Service meteorologist based in Upton.

Temperatures Thursday are forecast for the upper 50s, he said, with Friday looking to be a windy day, with highs in the mid 50s.

For the weekend, chilly air is moving in Saturday, bringing highs in the upper 40s to lower to mid 50s on Sunday, he said.

As for fall foliage, color is expected to be "just past peak" this weekend on most of Long Island, according to a weekly foliage report on Iloveny.com. However, "there are still many very colorful areas across both Suffolk and Nassau counties," the report said.

Look for "bright gold, orange, yellow, pink, red, purple and green leaves" in the Hamptons and North Fork, with "bright orange, yellow, red, purple, green, and some brown leaves" projected by spotters in Melville, according to the report.
