A winter weather advisory is in effect for Nassau County from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, forecasting a possible 2 to 4 inches of snow, with occasional visibility "below ½ mile in brief bands of moderate to heavy snow," the National Weather Service said.
Snow is expected to start during the morning commute, with "icy and hazardous travel conditions" forecast through the day, the advisory said.
Snow is expected to start falling from west to east, with the heaviest in the late morning to early afternoon, said Joey Picca, National Weather Service Meteorologist based in Upton.
There's also concern Monday for hazardous evening and nighttime driving conditions, resulting from "abundant low level moisture . . . and temperatures dropping below freezing," the weather service said in a special weather statement. Standing water is expected to freeze Monday night, the service said, and drivers should take special care on "bridges, overpasses and untreated roads."
As for Tuesday, "right now chances are very good that most places on Long Island will see snow," Picca said, arriving in bands that mean that "one place may get several inches" with a spot just 10 miles away seeing only an inch or so. Snow should end between 4 and 5 p.m., he said.
Regarding temperatures, highs in the mid-30s are expected earlier in the morning Tuesday, slowly decreasing to right around freezing, he said.
