Tuesday's rain will last through the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday, when a warming trend will begin this week that could bring Long Island some much needed signs of spring.
The rain will give way to a partly sunny Wednesday with highs in the mid-40s, according to the National Weather Service. After Wednesday's afternoon sunshine, rain is a possibility from Wednesday night through Friday morning.
“The best chances for rain are going to be Thursday during the day, and then Thursday night we have high chances for rain, about 80 to 90%,” weather service meteorologist Jim Connolly said. Chances of rain drop but still linger on Friday, he added.
Temperatures will remain in the 40s through the week, rise just over 50 degrees on Saturday, then soar into the mid- to upper 50s on Sunday, according to the weather service. The above-normal temperatures will come with a price, however, in the form of more chances of rain Saturday night and Sunday night.
The gloomy atmosphere is good news for Long Islanders eager to look outside their windows and see the green grass of their homes.
“There should be a significant amount of [snow] melting through the rest of the week, especially with the warming temperatures and the rain,” Connolly said. “There could also be some periods of fog, which should help eliminate the snow as well.”
