West Babylon upsets Northport
Yup. You read that headline right.
West Babylon defeated the Class A state champions, 11-8, behind five goals from Northwestern-bound Christina Esposito. Cortney Fortunato, the No. 1 recruit in the country, was held to one goal in what I'm gonna go ahead and call a Herculean effort by defender Madison Vasquez. Vasquez, a sophomore, has only been playing lacrosse for two years.
"She was one of the highlights of the game," coach Colleen Kalgus said. "She really denied [Cortney]...She was pretty calm and she likes challenges"
West Babylon went up 5-0 with 8:20 left in the first quarter before the Tigers came back to end the half 6-4. But the Eagles kept them at bay, thanks partially to Samantha Apuzzo, who finished with three goals and seven draw controls. West Babylon won 12-of-20.
"[Northport] is the type of team that, you can be up 10-0, and they can come back," Kalgus said. "We couldn't give them the opportunity with draw controls and we had to keep the ball at our end."
As for Fortunato: "We made sure she didn't touch the ball."
West Babylon was also bailed out by goalie Alexis Maldonado, who had seven saves, including a big one that deflected off her ankle with about eight minutes left to play.
