At 6 a.m. Thursday, WFAN’s morning team offered a somber take on the conviction of their former colleague, Craig Carton, with his co-host, Boomer Esiason, saying, “I think all of us are saddened by the news.”

By shortly after 7 a.m., Esiason’s co-host, Gregg Giannotti, was responding to afternoon host Mike Francesa by calling him “insecure and narcissistic and miserable.”

So it went on another strange day at the station, which has been roiled by drama and controversy over the past 14 months.

The most shocking was Carton’s arrest on Sept. 6, 2017, which resulted on Wednesday in him being convicted on federal charges of conspiracy, wire fraud and securities fraud.

Esiason acknowledged the damage to Carton’s victims, then said, “When the news came down I wasn’t shocked; I was saddened. I was saddened for his family. I will miss Craig. I have missed Craig.”

Later, he referenced Carton’s apparent gambling problem, saying, “For anybody out there who’s ever had anybody in their life who’s dealt with any sort of addiction, drugs, alcohol, gambling, this is a cautionary tale about how your life can spiral out of control and how it can affect so many around you.”

Producer Al Dukes insisted he had no idea of the depth of Carton’s problems and entanglements, as did update man Jerry Recco, who said he felt “a sense of responsibility” thinking of times he enjoyed with Carton at casinos.

“I didn’t know it was as bad as it was,” he said.

Said Esiason, “At the end of the day you have to take a big, deep breath and hope that Craig gets through this next stage of it and when he’s done with that, that somehow, some way he can reconnect with his listeners or he can do something positive to help people deal with what he’s dealt with over the past 14 months.”

An hour later, a caller referenced comments from Francesa on Wednesday in which he said on the air that the morning show “stinks” and that Giannotti is “short on ability.”

He also urged Giannotti to stop doing his impersonation of Francesa as a comedic bit.

“What he is is he’s an insecure bully who thinks those things are going to affect me, affect us, and it just doesn’t,” Giannotti said.

Then Giannotti switched into his mock Francesa voice and poked fun at the content of Francesa’s show itself.

Eventually he reverted to his own voice and said, “I’ve gotten to this point now where when I hear this stuff my first reaction is to crack up. Because I’m the opposite of what he is . . . I never want to be the person who has had all the success that he’s had, all the money that he’s made, and be as miserable as he is and insecure and narcissistic and miserable, and that’s what he is.

Upon being apprised of Giannotti’s comments, Francesa said, “Not worthy of comment.”
