Wheatley's Rothstein, Kings Park's Cancemi and Portledge's Porrino throw no-hitters
Matt Rothstein threw a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts and powered Wheatley to a 9-0 win over Malverne in Nassau BC-I baseball Monday.
Rothstein, who walked two, struck out eight of the nine batters he faced in the third, fourth and fifth innings and went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
Rightfielder Mike Dougherty caught a sinking line drive in the second inning to help save the no-hitter in the sixth. Lambert Chu went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the win.
Porrino throws no-hitter. Eighth-grader Anthony Porrino threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts for Portledge in a 7-0 win over Knox in non-league. Tim Barbaro went 2-for-3 as Portledge improved to 8-1 in non-league.
SOFTBALL
A second no-no for Cancemi. Eighth-grader Cassie Cancemi tossed her second no-hitter of the season with four walks and seven strikeouts for Kings Park (9-6) in a 6-0 win over Bellport in Suffolk League V. Cancemi retired 12 batters in a row from the third through the sixth inning.
