Tucked into a Mastic Beach neighborhood is the William Floyd Estate, a sprawling, 613-acre plot that was once a colonial plantation. Eight generations of Floyds lived in the house, including William Floyd, who scrawled his signature on the Declaration of Independence. Here, you can see the house's exterior. The National Park Service has released new management options for the William Floyd Estate and is soliciting public comments on the plan.

The preliminary management plan outlines different ways the park service could increase interest in the estate, which was once the home of Gen. William Floyd, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

One alternative includes developing the estate into a “historical park and museum,” according to the management plan. That alternative would seek to “embrace more of the site’s historic regional context with more collaborative exhibits and programming.”

The park service is accepting comments until Oct. 31.

A newsletter outlining the management plan is available at the William Floyd Estate, 245 Park Dr. in Mastic Beach, as well as other park offices. The estate is open Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. until mid-November.

Information about how to comment is available by emailing fire_island_gmp@nps.gov or by calling Chris Soller at 631-687-4751.
