A couple refused to let death break them apart, proving love is eternal.
Two skeletons discovered at a “lost” chapel last week in Leicestershire, England, have been holding hands for 700 years, researchers reported.
Archaeologists from the University of Leicester Archaeological Services unearthed the pair during a four-year excavation at the Chapel of St. Morrell, according to a news statement.
A picture of the ancient man and woman, who still “appear to be maintaining their toothy grins,” has gone viral.
In the past week, nearly 10,000 people have tweeted about the hand-holding couple, according to Topsy, a social media analytics firm.
It seems to have even served as inspiration for hopeless romantics.
“Wouldn't it be amazing to find somebody I can hold hands with for centuries?!?” one Twitter user asked.
“Now that's true love. ... Dying together ...” another tweeted.
But archaeologists are wondering if there’s more to the story.
“'We have seen similar skeletons before from Leicester where a couple has been buried together in a single grave,” Vicki Score, ULAS project manager, said in a news statement. “The main question we find ourselves asking is why were they buried up there?”
Score said researchers are wondering if the chapel could have served as some sort of special place of burial at the time.
It’s also possible that the church refused the bodies because they were criminals, foreigners or sick.
Regardless, hundreds of people are visiting the site to see the skeletons.
A total of 11 skeletons — radiocarbon dated to the 14th century — have been excavated at the chapel so far, but none appear to be as in love as these two.
