PARIS (AP) — French President Nicolas Sarkozy says Russia has agreed to buy at least two French warships in a deal that has worried Russia’s neighbors.
Sarkozy’s office says in a statement that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev informed Sarkozy on Friday of Russian approval to buy two Mistral-class warships.
The Mistral, which could carry up to 16 helicopters and dozens of armored vehicles, would allow Russia to land hundreds of troops quickly on foreign soil.
