WASHINGTON STATE: Search ends for missing men

The Coast Guard suspended its search Sunday for four men missing from a fishing trawler off the coast, saying it's unlikely the men are still alive. Petty Officer Shawn Eggert said crews in Coast Guard cutters and an MH-60 helicopter covered more than 1,300 square miles since the 70-foot Lady Cecelia sent a distress signal early Saturday. The Coast Guard identified the missing as Dave Nickels, 42, and Jason Bjaranson, 38, of Warrenton, Ore.; Chris Langel, 25, of Kaukauna, Wis.; and Luke Jensen, 19, of Ilwaco, Wash. Rescue crews searched through the night after finding debris, an empty lifeboat and an oil sheen several miles off the coast.

NATIONWIDE: Colleges oust plastic bottles

More than 90 colleges are banning the sale or restricting the use of plastic water bottles, unnerving the $22 billion retail packaged-water industry. The University of Vermont, the latest to join the movement, said it would stop sales early next year. Freshmen at colleges across the country are being greeted with stainless-steel bottles in their welcome packs and encouraged to use hydration stations where free, filtered water is available. Brown University, which used to sell about 320,000 bottles of water a year in vending machines and campus stores, ended sales in dining halls in 2010. Harvard and Dartmouth College are installing hydration stations in new buildings to reduce trash.

CALIFORNIA: Troubled church to move

The Crystal Cathedral is getting a new name and the congregation of the financially struggling Orange County megachurch will relocate, its senior pastor said Sunday. The ministry will be renamed Hope Center of Christ, Sheila Schuller Coleman said, and a new location will announced in a few weeks. The glass-paned cathedral was sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese for the church to leave federal bankruptcy protection.
