The iconic, centuries-old Notre Dame Cathedral was badly damaged in a fire that broke out Monday, April 15, 2019, in Paris.

Authorities consider the fire an accident, possibly as a result of restoration work. It occurred as the cathedral's spire was undergoing a $6.8 million renovation project. The spire collapsed in the flames and the roof, where the blaze began, was destroyed. The church's structure was saved, Paris fire chief Jean-Claude Gallet said.

The fire was declared out Tuesday.
