BRITAIN: 3 accused of terrorism goal

Three Muslim men, Richard Dart, 29, Imran Mahmood, 21, and Jahangir Alom, 26, were charged with traveling to Pakistan to train for terror, Scotland Yard said early Thursday. Ruksana Begum, 22, was charged with having material likely to be of use for terrorism.


MALI: Aid workers freed in exchange

A helicopter was sent to Mali on Wednesday from Burkina Faso to retrieve three European hostages held for 10 months by a jihadist group, according to the governments of Italy and Spain. The hostages, whose departure was delayed by a sandstorm, were freed in a prisoner exchange, a prison official in neighboring Mauritania told The Associated Press. Spaniards Enric Gonyalons and Ainhoa Fernandez del Rincon and Italian Rossella Urru are aid workers who were kidnapped from a refugee camp in southern Algeria in October. The Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO by its French acronym) was responsible for their kidnapping.


HUNGARY: Nazi suspect, 97, detained

A 97-year-old alleged Nazi-era war criminal was detained Wednesday, accused of torturing deportees before they were sent off to death camps. Laszlo Csatary was placed under house arrest after interrogation, the Budapest Metropolitan Court said. Csatary made a "contradictory" statement, denying charges while saying his actions done on "higher orders," the acting chief prosecutor said. The Simon Wiesenthal Center had urged Hungarian authorities to arrest Csatary, its "most-wanted Nazi war criminal," who was found living in Budapest.


TANZANIA: Ferry sinks, killing 12

Twelve people were killed as a ferry sank off the coast of the island region of Zanzibar. Witnesses said the ferry, leaving Dar es Salaam yesterday for Zanzibar, popular with tourists, carried more than 200 people.
