EGYPT: 3 freed by kidnappers

Two American tourists and their Egyptian guide, abducted Friday by a Bedouin in the Sinai Peninsula, were released unharmed on Monday. The Rev. Michel Louis, 61, and Lissa Alphonse, 39, Boston-area residents, and their guide, Haytham Ragab, had been kidnapped from a bus by a Bedouin demanding the release of his uncle, detained on suspicion of drug possession. The kidnapper, Jirmy Abu-Masuh, was promised that authorities were working on his uncle's release.


19 die in building collapse

The death toll in the collapse of a building in the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria rose to 19 as the search for survivors continued Monday. An 11-story building in a poor neighborhood collapsed late Saturday onto three adjacent buildings. The dead and the nine injured lived in the smaller buildings.


THE EMIRATES: Activist sent to Thailand

The United Arab Emirates stripped an online activist of his right to live in the country and deported him to Thailand on Monday, part of a widening crackdown on alleged challenges to the state since the Arab Spring uprisings, a rights group said. London-based Emirates Center for Human Rights said Ahmed Abdul Khaleq, a "stateless" resident, was deported on a Comoro Islands passport arranged by UAE authorities. He did not have any reported connection to Thailand. His expulsion follows a wave of detentions this week of seven people suspected of plotting against the ruling system.


GHANA: Volunteer kills intruder

A U.S. Peace Corps volunteer stabbed an alleged robber, who died later, police said Monday. Two Peace Corps volunteers, who said they were robbed and used a knife in self-defense, were questioned and released.
