HONDURAS: Relatives storm morgue
Hundreds of relatives of inmates who burned or suffocated to death when a fire raged through a prison last week forced their way into a morgue Monday to demand the remains of loved ones. The group of women and some men broke into a refrigerated container and opened at least six body bags, prosecutors spokesman Melvin Duarte said. Tear gas was used to chase the people out of the morgue, he said. No one was injured during the confrontation in Tegucigalpa, although a woman fainted. The fire in a crowded prison in the city of Comayagua killed at least 359 prisoners. There were 852 inmates at the prison, which was built in 1978 to house 250 prisoners.
SUDAN: Three civilians held as spies
Three civilians with a joint UN/African Union peacekeeping force are being held by rebels in Darfur and accused of being spies, a spokeswoman for the mission said Monday. A group of 55 peacekeepers including 50 Senegalese troops were blocked Sunday by the rebel Justice and Equality Movement from passing through a village in northwest Darfur, UNAMID spokeswoman Susan Manuel said. Most of the group was allowed to move ahead on Monday, but three, including a Yemeni policeman and two Sudanese translators, were kept behind, she said. "I can assure that our staff are not spies."
KENYA: 4 die as U.S. plane crashes
The U.S. military said Monday an American reconnaissance plane crashed 6 miles from the only U.S. base in Africa, killing four service members on board. A military statement Monday said the crash occurred about 8 p.m. Saturday. U.S. personnel from Camp Lemonnier in the tiny Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti responded to the scene. Specialist Ryan Whitney of the 1st Special Operations Wing said initial indications are that hostile fire was not involved. The plane was conducting an intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance mission. Camp Lemonnier lies only miles from the border with Somalia.
