GERMANY / Air show spectator killed
Police say the pilot of a small propeller-driven biplane lost control of his aircraft while taking at a flight show in southern Germany and crashed into a group of spectators, leaving one person dead and several injured. A spokesman said Sunday that police had not yet established how many people were injured in the crash, at the Lilinghof airfield near the Bavarian town of Lauf.
SPAIN / ETA claims cease-fire
The armed Basque separatist group ETA, under pressure from political allies to renounce violence, announced another cease-fire Sunday, suggesting it might turn to a political process in its quest. But the Basque regional government immediately dismissed the announcement because ETA failed to renounce violence or announce its dissolution. Besides silence on whether it will surrender arms, ETA did not say if the truce was permanent or whether it would halt other activities.
BRITAIN / Troops underfunded?
The former head of the British Army has accused former prime ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown of forcing the military to fight in Iraq and Afghanistan without adequate funding. Gen. Richard Dannatt said in book extracts published Sunday that Blair "lacked the moral courage to impose his will" on Brown, who was his Treasury chief and succeeded him as Labour prime minister in 2007. He accused Brown of having a "malign" influence on funding of the Iraq and Afghan campaigns. Former Foreign Secretary David Miliband, who is running for leadership of the Labour Party, rejected Dannatt's criticisms.
DENMARK / Private-rocket launch fails
Two Danish space enthusiasts have failed in their first attempt to send up a privately built rocket into space. Their spokeswoman, Sophie Dalgaard, says a fuse problem stopped the launch of the 30-foot rocket Sunday, from a barge near the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. She says they will try again.
