WWE WrestleMania 29 generated more than $100 million in economic impact, study says

A study by a consulting firm that measures the economic impact of special events has concluded that last April’s WWE WrestleMania 29 festivities in New York and New Jersey generated $101.2 million for the region.

The study, conducted by the Toronto-based Enigma Research Corporation and commissioned by WWE, calculated the final number as the “direct, indirect and induced impact derived from spending by non-locals visiting specifically for WrestleMania 29.”

“The entire week of events helped generate a tremendous boost for our economy, and we look forward to the possibility of MetLife Stadium hosting a future WrestleMania,” New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said in a news release.

WrestleMania 29, according to a WWE release distributed just before the end of the April 7 show, was the highest grossing live event in WWE history and the highest grossing entertainment event in MetLife Stadium history, totaling $12.3 million. The announced crowd was 80,676.

WrestleMania "is a great opportunity to really market the city to an international audience that tends to stay longer and spend more when they're here," Emily Mayrath, communications director for NYC & Company, New York City's official tourism bureau, said before the show.

WrestleMania 30 will take place on April 6, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
