Wyandanch church celebrates St. Patrick's

Four-year-old Giuliana McGuigan, of Melville, loves to dance around the house, especially along with Michael Flatley’s “Riverdance.”

“Every time I put the video on, she jumps up and starts dancing,” said her mother, Maria McGuigan.

Giuliana was thrilled to showcase her Irish-inspired dance moves Sunday at the 13th annual St. Patrick’s Day Celebration held at the Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Wyandanch.

Through donations collected at the door, the event raised $1,300 for the general church fund.

Students from Mise Éire Irish Dancers in Babylon performed the jig accompanied by dance tunes during the celebration, much to the delight of the 100 people in attendance. Mise Éire means “I am Ireland.’

Mise Éire instructor Patricia Love, 52, of West Islip, understands her students’ love for Irish dance. She learned Irish dancing when she was a teenager and found it so much fun that she still teaches it to others.

Six-year-old Fiona Stapleton, of Deer Park, began dancing at age 2. She was inspired to learn after watching her grandmother, mother and older sister perform the traditional dance.

Her dad Viv Stapleton, proudly watched his daughter perform.

“She instantly loved doing the Irish dance steps. She is having fun,” said her father.

Prior to the dancers, the Bob Morris Irish Band kept the crowd dancing with their banjo playing. The St. Patrick’s Day celebration began at the church as a fundraiser and the perfect opportunity for the local community to have fun and recognize Irish culture.

“What’s not to love about today’s celebration? There is fun here for everyone,” said parish pastor Fr. Bill Brisotti.
