Red Sox throw a punch but the Yankees punch right back
Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras quieted the Yankees' crowd in the top of the sixth with a solo home run off Max Fried to bring Boston within, 2-1.
But the Bronx faithful wouldn't stay quiet for long.
In the bottom of the frame, the Red Sox brought in star lefthander Garrett Crochet, a starter who hadn't pitched since April due to injury. Crochet struck out Spencer Jones to lead off but the ball got away from catcher Adley Rutschman. Jones racing down the first-base line was initially called out but the Yankees challenged the call. The ruling on the field was overturned and Jones reached first on the dropped-third strike.
With George Lombard Jr. at the plate, Jones took off for second. Rutschman threw the ball into centerfield and Jones raced to third. Later in the at-bat, Lombard laced a single to right to drive in Jones to make it a 3-1 game. Crochet then allow a single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and an infield bunt single to Trent Grisham before being taking out of the game
