Yaphank's Main St. to be renamed for pol

Main Street in Yaphank will be renamed in honor of former Suffolk Legis. Herbert Davis, who  died in August at age 81 after a long illness.

The Suffolk County Legislature authorized the street name change March 22.

Davis, a native of Yaphank, was first elected to the legislature in 1989. A Republican, he spent three terms in office before retiring. He also served as a chief and commissioner in the Yaphank Fire Department.

As a legislator, Davis pushed for a referendum, which was later approved by voters, for a 12-year limit for county elected officials. He also headed a legislative committee that investigated a controversial county deal to lease 1,700 cars from a Maryland-based firm.

“His contributions to the Yaphank community are endless, and the dedication of Main Street in his name ensures that future generations will always know his name and remember his countless years of service,” said Legis. Kate Browning (WF-Shirley).

A formal dedication ceremony will be held in May, according to an aide to Browning.
