You'll laugh (no foolin') at these events

Friday is April Fools' Day, and you can be sure something funny is going on, and we're not just talking about sitting on whoopee cushions or getting zapped by a joy buzzer.

Several stages and theaters will celebrate by going for big laughs this weekend, whether the jokes are from laugh-out-loud comics doing standup, or silent clowns doing pratfalls. We kid you not.

COMEDY TONIGHT

Comedy Madness Final Four

Governor's fifth annual March Comedy Madness appropriately wraps up on April Fools' Day with the final four -- Mel Garlick vs. Pat O'Rourke and Christopher Davis vs. Gary Vider -- squaring off in the hope of being crowned this year's king of comedy. The four funnymen will each perform a seven-minute set, with the winners in each division then going head-to-head for 10 minutes each. Besides the glory of being the victorious April Fool, the winner gets several prizes, not the least being a weekend performance date at Governor's. And from there, who knows? Past winners have gotten gigs on Comedy Central and NBC's "Last Comic Standing."

Think "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" without Drew Carey in this comedy show, which takes place downstairs at Theatre Three in a cafe setting complete with cocktail tables and drinks and snacks for the date-night crowd. Two teams of improv comics take audience suggestions and then use their quick wits to put together sidesplitting routines. A host keeps score and, let's just say, anything goes in what's become a Friday-night staple in Port Jeff.

'Girl Shy'

The New York Theatre Organ Society spotlights silent-screen clown Harold Lloyd in one of his best comedies, this 1924 classic in which he plays a shy tailor who can't even speak when he's near a woman. Then one day he meets the girl of his dreams, but she's already engaged. The laughs come fast and furious as Lloyd tries to get to the church on time to stop her wedding, along the way engaging in all sorts of April foolery, including stealing three cars, a trolley, a horse cart, a truck and a motorcycle.

As an extra treat, the film will feature live musical accompaniment by Bernie Anderson Jr. on Chaminade's Austin/Morton Theatre pipe organ.

'Murder by Death'

Master of mayhem Peter Sellers leads an all-star cast of comedy pros in this Neil Simon-scripted mystery farce about a team of the world's "greatest" sleuths (like Dick and Dora Charles played by David Niven and Maggie Smith) who get invited to a creepy mansion by an even creepier host (Truman Capote trying to act). Bodies disappear, secrets are revealed and laughs abound.
