Young Holy Trinity girls fall in CHSAA playoffs
The season ended Friday night for the young Holy Trinity girls basketball team with a 60-43 loss to Staten Island's Moore Catholic in the first round of the state CHSAA Class A playoffs at St. John Villa, but the future looks bright for the Titans.
Three sophomores, a freshman and a junior played the bulk of the minutes for Holy Trinity (12-14), which graduated all five starters from the 2009 state semifinalist.
"[The season] was a major learning experience," said Trinity coach John Lipani. "Just learning how to play at a high level in the competitive league we're in. I think they got a good taste of what our league is all about."
Moore Catholic (22-4) led by 21 points in the third quarter, but junior Meghan Orlando scored eight points in the quarter and sophomore Kristen Korzevinski added seven early in the fourth, including a three-point play with 5:30 left to cut it to 49-41.
But two Trinity players fouled out and sophomore Katie Poppe (11 points) turned an ankle and couldn't return as Moore Catholic ended the game on an 11-2 run.
Taylor Baggs had 26 points and hit 12 of 15 free throws to lead Moore Catholic, which went 27-for-36 from the line.
