Yovino gives Hofstra women NCAA first-round win
Tiffany Yovino headed in a cross from Grace Hawkins 9:04 into the contest and lifted Hofstra to a 1-0 win over Connecticut in an NCAA Tournament first-round women's soccer game at Boston College on Friday night.
Hofstra began the game on fire as it outshot the Huskies 4-0 in the first 10 minutes.
"We came out really well," Hofstra coach Simon Riddiough said. "For the first 20 minutes, UConn didn't know what was happening."
Connecticut (10-10-3) settled down the rest of the way and outshot the Pride 18-10. But Hofstra's defense didn't yield.
"It was just a refusal to lose," Riddiough said. "The girls battled. And the back end of the defense played well."
Hofstra (19-2) will face host Boston College, which handed the Pride its first loss in its season opener, in a second-round game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Hofstra men advance. Johannes Granh converted a penalty kick with five seconds left to lift No. 3 Hofstra to a 2-1 win over No. 2 VCU in a CAA semifinal at William & Mary.
Freshman Tyler Botte scored his first college goal with 4:59 left in regulation to tie the score at 1. Hofstra (8-6-5) will face the winner of the William & Mary vs. Delaware semifinal in the final at 1 p.m. Sunday.
