ZIP, ZIP AWAY
Zip lines -- cables that kids, teens and grown-ups can ride from tree to tree -- will be featured at the new Adventure Park at Long Island, scheduled to open June 21 in Wheatley Heights.
The aerial forest ropes park also will include a series of "challenge bridges" between tree platforms. The zip lines and bridges are connected in a series of different color-coded "treetop trails" that range from introductory to advanced.
The park will be on five acres within the Henry Kaufman Campgrounds at 75 Colonial Springs Rd. and is geared to ages 7 and older. It will be open during the summer from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, then move to fall hours before closing for the winter. For more information, visit longislandadventurepark.org and watch for an upcoming feature in Newsday and on exploreLI.com.
PHYSICS AND MINIATURE GOLF
A new outdoor, nine-hole miniature golf course has opened at the Children's Museum of the East End in Bridgehampton.
In keeping with the museum's mission, the golf course incorporates play with teaching kids basic principles of physics. Each hole has an informational sign that asks the golfer a question meant to teach a lesson specific to that hole.
For example, the Loop Du Jour hole, which has two large loop-the-loops, poses several questions, including "Which loop requires you to hit the ball harder?" and "What keeps the ball from falling?"
Other signs ask question such as, "What is centripetal force?" that are answered on the score cards. (A player, for instance, learns that centripetal force is the name given to the force that makes something follow a curved path.)
Signs are in English and Spanish, and score cards also are printed in both languages. The entire course is wheelchair accessible. The cost to play is $5.
The course is the first exhibit to be completed as part of the museum's $2 million capital campaign announced last fall; the museum is more than halfway toward that goal. The museum is at 376 Bridgehampton/Sag Harbor Tpke. in Bridgehampton. For more information, call 631-537-8250 or visit cmee.org.
