61.5 percent -- That's how much reports of identity theft attributed to compromised health records soared last year, perhaps boosted by the increase in computerized medical records. One obvious and long-considered approach to slowing that rise is for Medicare to stop using Social Security numbers as part of the program's claim number. Yet, it just doesn't happen. The numbers are like gold for identity thieves, and putting them on Medicare cards and records makes them much too easy to mine.
