My son works at a supermarket while continuing his college education. Committed to his responsibilities and to helping the community, he continues to work, in essence, on the front lines of this pandemic [“Early-bird hours hit with seniors,” News, March 20]. Like health care workers, he is constantly engaged with the public, where it is difficult to practice social distancing. 
Why is it that he and workers like him are not given protection — gloves and masks — from possibly infected individuals and contaminated surfaces. Supermarket and pharmacy workers cannot shelter in place so the government should mandate protective gear. We need these workers to continue supporting these essential services.

Though I praise Newsday’s thorough coverage of the coronavirus, I must point out that while you have beneficially reported news, closings, precautions and shortages, I have not seen inclusion of the obvious shortage of various fresh meats. I have shopped in Melville and Farmingdale supermarkets regularly for decades. 
Except for superstorm Sandy, I cannot recall such empty meat shelves. It seems to this super-senior that if we’d stop anxiety-driven shopping and just get what we need on our regular shopping cycles, there would plenty for everyone. So now the initial shortages of toilet paper, bottled water and hand sanitizers have expanded. 
Fruits and vegetables, though, appear to be in sufficient supply. Perhaps we do not take stock of healthy foods. Let’s all look forward to surviving this virus, thinking positive and getting back to our normal shopping and social ways. Without teamwork, the dogsled goes nowhere.

I think we need to take a media holiday from the coronavirus. It is one thing to keep the public informed, but it is quite another to overload us with information that makes some people panic. One only need go to the local grocery store and see the empty shelves that the media-created panic caused.

It appears that President Donald Trump has finally awakened to the reality of the global coronavirus pandemic and that it will create serious problems for our country. Unfortunately, he has never shown much regard for expertise. Valuable time was been wasted as he remained blissfully unaware of what he should do to prepare our country. 
Now, we are well behind the curve in having adequate testing and are woefully late in getting people to be serious about avoiding crowds. Our governors have been told they should buy needed hospital equipment themselves rather than having the federal government handle it. This president needs to spend less time praising himself, stop surrounding himself with fawning people, such as our vice president, and spend more time behaving more rationally.

President Donald Trump said, “I don’t believe you need 40,000 or 30,000 ventilators ... you’re going to major hospitals sometimes, they’ll have two ventilators. We need to be prepared, and being shortsighted is dangerous now. To go back to work, people need to be alive. Hope is not a plan. 
Back in 1975, a famous Daily News headline read: “Ford to city: Drop dead.”&nbsp;Now, in effect, it’s: “Trump to city: Drop dead.”

Like many, I have been overwhelmed with anxiety, worse than any other crisis I experienced. 
But this is today. We will return to normalcy. Our inability to be self-sufficient with medical supplies and necessities likely will never happen again. We are now gravely aware of our unfortunate dependence on foreign suppliers. But let us stop the blame game. After we were attacked at Pearl Harbor in 1941, a Japanese general stated he feared they had awakened a sleeping giant. The giant is awakened again, this time by a virus. 
Be strong, be kind and do not be fearful. Today’s lessons will only make us stronger tomorrow.

Let's get protective gear for supermarket employees

I read with competing levels of disappointment and anger that President Donald Trump refuses to use the full power of the federal government to defeat the coronavirus [“Trump declines to use powers,” News, March 26]. 
So many experts report that our response should be national in scope and that aid should be regionally proportionate based upon severity of impact. One can only wonder what is preventing the president from pulling out all the stops when it comes to helping us on Long Island and in New York City, where we are sustaining the greatest number of cases and deaths by far. It’s been said, “It’s good to be king,” which represents how the president has often executed his position. It appears he’s having even more fun playing God.

We are told of the need for ventilators for the expected surge in coronavirus cases, especially in this state [“Urgent need for ventilators in NY,” Editorial, March 25]. There is great concern that the supply won’t meet the demand in time. Anything that can supplement the ventilator functions should be investigated. Many people use CPAP machines for sleep apnea. For some, these machines represent an increased comfort level but not necessarily a life-or-death need. Their design could be evaluated and, with fast modifications, might be used to supplement ventilators in intensive care units. If viable, CPAP owners could lend or donate their machines to desperate patients.

The danger of the coronavirus to correction officers and other employees in jails cannot be overstated [“Police, jail officers positive for virus,” News, March 26]. People housed in close quarters, the prevalence of unsanitary conditions, and the lack of access to handwashing make jails a breeding ground for contagious diseases. A coronavirus outbreak at Rikers Island or any other local jail would result in numerous deaths and would spread to the larger community, placing more strain on an already overburdened health system. 
Further, at least 17 cases have been identified at the Nassau County Correctional Center and one at the Metropolitan Detention Center. Some are concerned that large-scale release would pose a risk to public safety. However, supervised release and pretrial supervision, which are utilized in state and federal courts and can include electronic monitoring, will address this concern. 
Releasing prisoners and limiting additions to the jails would lessen the danger of spreading the virus and benefit the persons released and those still being held as well as the jail workers, their families and the community.

We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, and we have little control [“A silent Island as virus shutdown takes effect,” News, March 24]. We can only do what we can and hope. 
What we need to understand, though, is something most of us never think of: Many people live in uncertainty and fear every day. They may not know where they will be tomorrow, or where their next meal will come from. They can’t be sure of their future. They can’t be sure of anything. 
How many people have no access to medical care? How many have children they can’t clothe or feed? How many families live in violent areas, or have no fresh water or electricity? 
Yes, for all of us right now, things may seem bleak. We’re grappling with uncertainty for perhaps the first time in our lives. But we have the ability to prepare. Assistance is available. When this is over, we’ll be OK. We’ll go to restaurants and movies. For many, however, the difficulties will continue. They’ll keep struggling and trying to endure. And when we remember this time, we’ll be thankful it’s over. 
But will we remember them?

Preparation key to beat COVID-19

The quarantine plus restrictions and closing of social gathering places and events has brought many things to light: time to slow down, think and be introspective. Many who are quarantined are evaluating different things about their lives, whether they want to or need to. But one thing I’m sure most people are feeling, even craving, perhaps, is human connection and interaction. Human connection is simply a vital part of life, and this quarantine has brought that into sharp focus. 
Humans are not solitary by nature, and life is meant to be experienced and shared. 
The irony of all this is that even before isolating and quarantining ourselves, we were already social distancing ourselves without realizing it — choosing to look down at our phone instead of engaging life and people, typing a text over grabbing a coffee with face-to-face conversation. There is no doubt this quarantine will have a negative impact on many people economically, but, hopefully, it’s also an eye-opener for some regarding the importance of social connecting. That’s never been more obvious than during these troubling times.

I am angry. Once again, New Yorkers have to beg for help [“NY infection rates are doubling every 3 days,” News, March 25]. I haven’t forgotten that after 9/11 we had to fight to get the appropriate security funding. How many years did it take the 9/11 first responders to be assured that they would get medical help they would need. How come there was no tweet from President Donald Trump to push through that bill? We had to beg again for that help. Then came superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Irene, and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz fought against New York getting aid because he said it would be wasted. Then, when Texas was hit by a hurricane, Cruz was instrumental in Texas getting the help it needed. No begging required. We pay more federal taxes here than almost all other states, but when we need help, they fight against us. Now we are in a critical, life-threatening situation and again we have to beg for help. I plan to remember this in the coming elections.

For many, going to school is for learning and socializing. For others, it is a refuge from an unsafe home environment. With many children out of the sight of caring school professionals, some children are at greater risk of harm. 
Yes, we need to socially distance from one another, but it doesn’t mean that we need to emotionally distance ourselves. Let’s safely look out for one another, and if you “see something, say something.” You might save a child’s life.

Your article on the frustration and disappointment for many scholar-athletes who may not get scholarships because many sporting events have been canceled [“Soaring uncertainties,” Sports, March 26] prompted an idea. Could Long Island high school sports authorities set up special track meets with limited referees, starter, judges and medical personnel in attendance? Each school sends its top three athletes in each event. Only two competitors on the track at a time. Mats by the pole vault get cleaned after each attempt. If not this, there must be a way to give the students who toiled for many years opportunities to continue education by earning a scholarship since many could not attend college without it.

The last thing we should do in this crisis is give more money to New York American Water and National Grid. Most important, we shouldn’t approve a rate hike for National Grid to build more fracked gas pipelines that we don’t want or need. If the COVID-19 crisis has taught us anything, it is that our water and energy systems should be owned by the public and operated in the public interest, to ensure that these essential resources are affordable, accessible, and sustainable.

The media’s reaction to a counter-narrative from President Donald Trump is typical of the left’s reaction to those on the right with dissenting voices: Shut them up. So only the left has science on its side? Scientists’ disagreements aside, how about the still-low U.S. death toll from the coronavirus? How about the lack of comparisons with deaths suffered every day from causes we can’t or choose not to control? Why are they not relevant to the discussion of returning to normalcy? We’re told this is different — it could result in hundreds of thousands of deaths. Soon we will know. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Trump’s alternative universe of facts turns out to be on the mark and he’s returned to office because liberals overplayed their hand, motivated not only by fear but a subconscious desire to prolong the crisis?

Quarantine proves human connection is essential

Because many elements of the federal government are attacking immigrant communities, New York must support the communities to help them thrive. An important step forward is to invest in these communities with New York Immigration Coalition’s proposed Promise Package, a state budget request that has three components. 
First, it seeks to invest $5 million to help refugee resettlement agencies more fully serve the refugees already in their communities. Since many of our resettled refugees live upstate, this would definitely help that region’s long-term population loss and help to reinvigorate local economies. 
Second, it requests $25 million for adult literacy education. These invaluable services were cut last year. Restoring funding will give people the ability to better support their families and communities. 
Third, it seeks to invest $25 million in immigration services to provide legal support, especially for those facing deportation. Having a lawyer makes a huge difference. Seventy-eight percent of immigrants with lawyers win their cases, versus 15% who don’t have legal help. 
The Promise Package would instill a renewed sense of confidence in these communities and offer some hope to our New York neighbors looking for a fair chance.

The political left claims to be the tolerant and fairness group. It continually attempts to label those on the right as the social dividers and antagonists. 
Aside from the examples of intolerance set by some of our learning institutions, I continue to see and be the target of the left’s rejection of opinions other than theirs. I have never seen any visible objections to bumper stickers supporting former President Barack Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, or former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, but it seems that a day rarely goes by without my Keep America Great sticker supporting President Donald Trump triggering a derogatory finger salute. 
It seems the party of civility reserves that courtesy only for like thinkers.

NYS must help protect its immigrants

Now, the media and Democrats want to use the coronavirus as a political weapon against President Donald Trump and his administration [“Trump rivals’ plans on virus,” News, March 13]. Former Vice President Joe Biden says how much better he’d handle this, and the usual media outlets shake their heads at Trump’s handling in dismay. Yes, it’s true, compared to South Korea we are failing. They have many more tests than our country does. 
The media, though, and Democrats in Congress, can look in the mirror and find who’s to blame. Congress was busy spending time on a partisan impeachment, with Democrats saying Trump was guilty of extortion, claiming he put our country in peril for his own gain. With the Senate finally acquitting Trump on Feb. 5, many saw through this ridiculous charade, and the coronavirus was spreading. 
And if anyone is culpable, it’s the media and Democrats for using their time to impeach the president for what I see as strictly political reasons instead of governing and reporting more facts about this virus so we’d be better prepared.

Trump also has stated that daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner donate their time as presidential advisers, yet they have profited by holding unique positions. Moreover, Americans pay a lot to support their staffs. 
With nepotism, Trump has denied our country knowledgeable and experienced advisers, which we desperately need.

While the media identifies heroes and thanks them for their service, I know our workers are on that list, too.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo called on President Donald Trump by tweet to “nationalize the medical supply chain. Though Trump has already invoked the National Defense Act, he has yet to use it, claiming it gives him leverage to nudge corporations into voluntarily manufacturing needed medical gear. 
Trump’s hesitancy is dangerous. Cuomo and other governors have complained that their competing bids for supplies have met price gouging by vendors; states are badly strapped for funds. Delivering personal protective equipment and patient necessities in a bidding war has drastically slowed. Also, the lack of national coordination may well cost lives since those most in need are not necessarily atop the list. 
Trump is worried that corporations disdain “nationalization” and that he will be labeled a “socialist.” The American people, however, would be grateful if he just eschewed labels and worried about saving lives.

I am appalled by the younger population’s lack of respect regarding the COVID-19 crisis as it affects seniors. If a crisis primarily targets sectors of the population, it is a crisis for all. To see such blatant disregard for the social-distance regulations angers me, and it will have longstanding repercussions. Shame on this disrespectful group during this crisis.

These areas may be unaware they are hotspots and at greater risk. Then something can be done.

Give thanks to postal workers during the coronavirus pandemic

When reporting about coronavirus victims, the media must provide the right to privacy [“First 3 coronavirus deaths on LI, in Suffolk,” News, March 17]. However, it would be beneficial if we were given pertinent information. We should not only be given the age and medical information but also how the people believe they were exposed to the virus. It would help us understand if we are acting properly to avoid the disease’s spread. Also, follow up on their recoveries and how the virus affected them.

In 2018, officials tasked with preparations to combat the spread of viruses were ousted by the Trump administration and not replaced — until the coronavirus hit the United States. Though President Donald Trump cannot be blamed for COVID-19, his cavalier attitude about the danger of this pandemic caused the slow reaction by the federal government. Downplaying the danger, lying about the availability of testing and a vaccine, and having the mendacity to state that the virus is “totally under control” can be laid at his feet. 
Now, to me, Trump wants to buy his reelection by giving $1,000 to Americans. It’s indicative of this administration’s arrogance and belief that Americans can be bought. And so cheaply. Perhaps a better idea would be to hold in abeyance debts, rents, mortgages, etc., thus freeing up money for essentials and alleviating families’ anxieties. This administration has put unqualified people in key positions. Now, we reap what he has sown.

Isn’t it ironic that some states that advocate sanctuary cities, legalization of marijuana, and not cooperating with the federal government, blame the government in a time of crisis, then request federal assistance? 
The coronavirus is an example. Several states must prioritize future needs for national emergencies.Yes, it means more careful planning in terms of medications, the countries where they’re manufactured and possible shortages. And it means thinking about all the supplies needed, including having programs in place and warehousing emergency supplies. 
The federal government isn’t an all-knowing entity. The states must take a more aggressive and responsible role for the good of all people, not the politically popular agendas. 
Voting is how we take responsibility for having a government that represents all of us.

With the state Democratic presidential primary approaching on April 28, the majority of older voters likely will not go to the polls because of the coronavirus. Voter turnout will likely be extremely low. 
Now is the time to enact mail-in voting so New York State can be prepared. No one knows how long the virus will be active, meaning the November election also could be in jeopardy. California and many other states have mail-in voting and avoid low voter turnout.

As I get older, I realize I must rely on many others to continue a normal life, especially as we face this crisis. I just wanted to publicly express my gratitude to those who make that possible: the police, firefighters, physicians, truck drivers, and emergency medical services, supermarket and sanitation workers among others.

If I read a science-fiction book on the world recently, I would say it’s too far-fetched and would say this could never happen. When I read that schools are closing along with businesses because of the coronavirus, and airlines and the government is telling us to not leave our homes, it is more than frightful [“Coming to grips with fear factor,” News, March 15]. This period of time will never be forgotten. I just pray we’ll reach normalcy soon.

These were all pandemics that occurred throughout history. Have faith and this, too, shall pass. 
The important thing, to me, is not to panic but to realize that some in the media are taking advantage of a captive audience by acting as commentators instead of news reporters.

Why are Long Islanders in such an Armageddon hysteria over food, stripping grocery store shelves in a panic? This is not a hurricane. The roads and bridges are open for delivery trucks. Cows are being milked, chickens are laying eggs, and I suspect any food product you might need can and will be delivered. There is no reason for the food supply chain to be broken. We all need to calm down and just think sensibly for a moment. Wash your hands. Stay out of large crowds, and carry on.

Your op-ed “Trying to catch a viral tiger by the tail” [Opinion, March 16] states: “Three times this century a coronavirus has jumped the species barrier to inflict human population. Each instance has caught the global public health community off guard — including now.” Who is to blame for the world’s woeful lack of preparedness? One may point to the nation’s priorities. 
According to its latest “Cost of War” report, the Pentagon spent $1.46 trillion on war-related costs between 9/11 and June 2017. That comes out to about $250 million a day over 16 years, or just over $91 billion a year. How can you justify these outrageous expenditures when we can’t establish new medical facilities nor provide necessary equipment in response to this national emergency which demands nothing short of a warlike response? How sad that President Donald Trump tells a group of governors: “Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment — try getting it yourselves.” New York, with just 53,000 hospital beds and 3,000 intensive care unit beds, is not ready for a pandemic. Maybe some of the funds spent on upgrading nuclear arsenals and building cost-overrun fighter aircraft should have been more prudently redirected to proactively prepare for the national emergency we now face.

Many people, including retirees, must work part-time jobs but are not considered part of the work force for unemployment benefits. It’s finally time for the government to help retirees when the economy collapses.

Attributing a death mainly to the virus just heightens the fear running rampant through the world today. Let’s face it: An infected hangnail at my age could push me over the edge.

Virus exposes our vulnerabilities

With schools closed because of the coronavirus and thus no school lunches, families who rely on schools to feed their children may be unable to feed all family members lunch, especially if they’re relying on food stamps for all or most of their groceries. Food that should last a week will now last, say, only four days because these families were not expecting to feed children weekday lunches at home. Families also may not have enough time to go shopping unexpectedly. And some schools offer breakfast as well as lunch. 
We must not allow these children to go hungry. How do we do this? Inform as many federal and state officials as possible, along with the news media and social networking. A government agency and/or the Red Cross could take charge.

Why is there such a shortage of hand sanitizer [“Public asked to report price gouging,” News, March 9]? It’s not like we don’t know how to make it. Why must the public resort to making its own from YouTube videos? Now, not only are many store shelves devoid of sanitizer, but also there’s virtually no aloe or alcohol, which are the ingredients to make it at home. It’s ridiculous because this simple fix would limit the frantic search and keep the public calm. I also see products claiming to be sanitizer as fake and possibly dangerous. 
The government can allay our fears and stress by making sure there is an abundance of hand sanitizer. Why are situations complicated when the answers are simple?

<h2>Paper bag fees are like a new tax</h2> 
I remember when grocery stores offered both paper and plastic bags at no additional charge, but then the paper bags slowly went away. I am not sure if paper bags are more expensive than plastic bags, but if they are, New York has found a way to allow businesses to offset that higher cost and siphon off a little for the state as well [“Left holding the bag? Plastic ban explained,” News, Feb. 23]. 
The paper bag fee is really a tax. The first five cents charged for a paper bag will go toward both the state’s Environmental Protection Fund (three cents ) and to localities (two cents) for buying reusable shopping bags for residents in low-income areas. You have the mandated socialist redistribution of money with the two cents diverted, and you have a system that harms the economy because it is designed to raise the cost of items produced from fossil fuel and, in this case, the cost of replacements. New York State has found a way to get itself off the hook as the one to blame for a new tax and has made our neighborhood retailer the bad guy.

Regarding the editorial about the state Department of Transportation not fixing roads [“Making LI roads a priority,” March 11], the real issue is Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s policies that are turning the state into a failed European welfare state. New York has a $6 billion deficit and in my view that is due to Medicaid overspending and the new minimum wage as two of the causes. The governor is defunding state agencies to support his progressive agenda of expanding Medicaid and green energy. When the funds for roads are allocated, then the roads get repaved. The governor and State Legislature are responsible to allocate funds for roads. But the main reason roads aren’t repaired rests with those who voted for the governor, the legislators and those who support them in the media. 
So next time you hit a pothole and bend a rim, look in the mirror and blame the person you see. The blame is yours.

President Donald Trump is unfit to lead in a crisis, and COVID-19 highlights that [“Defending U.S. virus response,” News, March 7]. He has shown his ignorance, arrogance and narcissism. That was evident during the pharmaceutical executives meeting when he kept insisting the vaccine might be ready in two months. When executives corrected him, he ignored them and kept repeating it. 
His trip to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had him insulting Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington, the state with the most deaths, and interrupting CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield to “correct” him and state that anyone who needed to could get tested — a lie. He admitted he wanted to keep the quarantined cruise ship passengers docked outside California because “I like the numbers being where they are.” While wearing a red campaign hat, he praised Fox News and again referenced the Ukraine “perfect transcript.” 
His COVID-19 response is a microcosm of his presidency. Trump only cares about himself, ratings, polls, the stock market and crisis optics.

Anyone who has traveled around Europe’s major cities like London or Paris and used their transit systems may have realized that they shut down for a few hours a day. They are closed from about midnight to about 5 a.m. This allows for cleaning and ongoing maintenance of the system. 
In New York, almost daily we see and hear news telling us of major delays due to maintenance failures in our system. The man who was in charge, Andy Byford, had a lot of knowledge in this area. However, he recently quit. To make matters worse, police are often bullied by New York’s mayor, causing morale to be low and that makes them less effective. 
If our system would shut down at midnight, people working the midnight shift could use buses, hail rides or drive their own cars to get to work. If we duplicate Europe’s transit system, we could have a much-improved traveling experience and there might be less crime in our subways.

<h2>We need more rest areas on the LIE</h2> 
After performing at a blood drive today, I was driving to another job on the LIE. I felt my eyes closing, and planned to stop at the rest stop area. Unfortunately, I didn’t make it. With the windows open, the radio blasting, I suddenly found myself scraping the right lane divider and totaled my car. 
While following the tow truck in my wife’s car, I saw the sign (after the rest stop) proclaiming “you snooze, you lose.” 
True, but there are no “cut-out areas” to stop. In the United Kingdom, there are clearly marked areas to pull over if you’re tired. They are numerous on all types of roads. If you pull into the breakdown lane on the LIE to snooze, you risk getting a ticket. 
I snoozed. I lost — and found out I didn’t have collision on my policy, so I really lost. Had there been an area to pull over, I would have done so instead of trying to make it to the rest stop. 
Yes, it was entirely my fault. But perhaps we can emulate the United Kingdom and provide more places to pull over safely on the LIE.

I could not disagree more and in fact take exception to the letter writer who criticized the Democratic presidential candidates for berating President Donald Trump’s [/TEXT]handling of the coronavirus threat [“Politicians: Unite and stop criticism,” March 5]. Trump has spent much of his presidency trashing scientists and defunding research. Now that he needs them, we have a problem. 
At the very least, Trump has a credibility problem. He has lied so much, how can he be trusted? How can we feel reassured? We should all work together for the welfare of the country. But so long as Trump’s definition of right and wrong is how it makes him look, there will remain at a minimum a lack of confidence in our leader. Hopefully, this nightmare will end soon.

Three days after the World Trade Center attacks, Christine Todd Whitman, then head of the Environmental Protection Agency, told reporters: “The good news continues to be that air samples we have taken have all been at levels that cause no concern.” 
I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear what is really being said at these meetings.

Let’s get local political leaders on record. How do they assess the threat level? What response and containment efforts are they directing? How can unprepared law enforcement, public services and the public react? Who are they to listen to? 
The media must vigorously report what scientists say about containment efforts, not just immediate incident response. It is not enough to just give the latest victim count. Let us really understand this threat.

Had the writer simply gone online and reserved a time to present her papers to the DMV she literally would have “jumped the line,” as most people I have spoken with, including myself, have done successfully rather than spiting herself and broadcasting negative sentiments on New York State policies and legislators, which doesn’t help anyone.

This capital investment is critical for economic success, a growing population and transportation to New York City. It will also help alleviate the strains placed on commuters when dealing with the lack of parking in downtown Syosset and Hicksville. 
This station would be transformative in paving the way for a brighter future on Long Island.

<h2>Up limit on Social Security tax</h2> 
I haven’t heard one candidate mention anything about continuing to finance Social Security. We, the taxpayers, currently pay toward it only on the income we receive up to $132,900. Everyone should pay on all income, including bonuses. This would result in the continued financial stability of Social Security. 
Then, people making less than $40,000 could get a refund of their Social Security contribution when they file their income tax.

Are we getting accurate information from this administration, or only what they want us to believe? And somehow, we’re told, this is also Democrats’ fault? 
We all need to think clearly now, being sure to only get our information from trusted medical sources, those with no hidden agenda, and take adequate precautions. Health professionals are best for this, not politicians.

Who do I thank for keeping the lines at the Department of Motor Vehicles still impossibly long, even after “fixes,” so I no longer want to secure an enhanced license? 
Who do I thank for the termination of the Global Entry program? Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and State Attorney General Letitia James state it is punitive action by President Donald Trump’s administration. What they fail to mention is that other states allow immigrants in the country illegally to have driver’s licenses, but New York is the only state that does not allow Homeland Security access to the database. Hence, no Global Entry here. 
Who do I thank for the lack of coverage of the New Way Forward legislation in Congress? To me, anyone wishing entry here could do so without being vetted. I believe this would open the doors for drug cartels, sex traffickers and other criminals. 
Who do I thank for making taxpayers feel unsafe and feel like second-class citizens? Actually, I do know, and I will show my appreciation or lack thereof at the polls in November.

I just returned from the Department of Motor Vehicles and, to my surprise, they do not accept a Medicare card with your Social Security number affixed on the card, even though I supplied all the other necessary documents. 
The agent tells me that they will accept any pay stub with a Social Security number but not a document from Social Security which proves I have a Social Security number. Where is the logic in this policy? This was a very frustrating experience that should not have happened.

<h2>How to fix Syosset parking woes</h2> 
A major problem at the Hicksville railroad station is the lack of adequate parking [“Hicksville progress can’t derail,” Editorial, Feb. 16]. The same problem exists at the Syosset station. 
The Town of Oyster Bay and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority should give serious consideration to reopening the Landia station, which is midway between Hicksville and Syosset. That station, which opened on Dec. 15, 1952 to serve employees at Fairchild and Cerro Wire, closed on Oct. 3, 1973. For more than three decades, nothing has been done with the abandoned property adjacent to the former station. With the advent of the third track to Hicksville coming at the end of 2022, there will be an increase in reverse commuting and lots more people riding the railroad. A reopened Landia station would provide much-needed relief for the parking situations in Hicksville and Syosset.

<h2>Spousal refusal: A destructive idea</h2> 
Regarding “‘Spousal refusal’ in state’s sights” [News, Feb. 24] about Medicaid nursing care and the surviving spouse’s inability to pay for it, how can anyone believe there is a long line of “rich” people abusing the system so taxpayers wind up paying for their spouses’ long-term care in nursing homes? 
Medicaid’s requirements are humiliating and an invasion of any privacy a person has left. And it is not “free money.” Medicaid requires that you give your Social Security, pension and any other asset you have as payment toward the nursing home bill. Believe me, no rich person on earth would want to go through such degrading requirements. 
This entire idea will fall squarely on the shoulders of the healthy surviving senior, who barely gets by on his or her Social Security and savings. They will lose everything they own if this becomes law. I hope Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo will see this as an intentionally destructive idea.
