It’s time to eliminate physical education classes from our state’s public secondary schools. Many U.S. school districts have already done so, keeping kids just as healthy and saving millions of dollars.

The now-anachronistic practice was put in place in schools after World War II. Classes that taught how to milk cows and do other farming chores were eliminated to keep up with the times. Gym classes must follow suit.

Many students are already on school, community, and travel teams, and the 20 minutes of walking laps on the track or hitting pickleballs at each other is a waste of resources. Perhaps kids who need a physical break can be supervised by a volunteer.

We can’t keep paying teachers $100,000 a year to do this.
