"Charter school plans scuttled" [News, Sept. 23] quotes "a public school advocate" as saying charter schools often "weaken support for public schools while not providing anyone with a better education."

Aren't charter schools a part of the public school system? Haven't the charter schools in New York City proven that they do afford students a much better education? Starting with discipline and real structure, they are sought after by parents who want the best for their children.

All of us should be putting the children first instead of the system. These decisions are based solely on fear for the status quo. Long Island will never get ahead or out of its rut if we don't adopt a more progressive attitude.

NIMBY has stifled growth on Long Island for the nearly 40 years I've lived here. We won't allow private school vouchers, so parents can't pick the best schools for their kids, but we can give them the best public schools available. Charter schools on Long Island would make everyone put their best foot forward when it comes to educating our children.
