The news story "Whale species in Gulf facing extinction" [May 11] says that scientists believe there are fewer than 50 Bryde's whales off the west coast of Florida.

How can such an animal become extinct? The answer, as mentioned in the article, is increased human activity in the Gulf of Mexico. With this come accidents such as the BP oil spill in 2010.

These whales are already protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, but more must be done. I pray that we can save these beautiful creatures so future generations will be able to see them.
