Letter: Chinese company could threaten jobs

In response to “Growing panes” [Business, May 1], I was pleased to read of the size and prosperity of the architectural glass industry on Long Island: 19,500 people employed. That is truly amazing.
I am horrified to read that no one is stopping a Chinese company from building an $18.9-million fabrication and distribution facility in Shirley.
Unless this invasion is stopped now, our local glass industry could be decimated — another nasty blow to our local economy, which is still reeling from the loss of the aviation industry.
I am a retired purchasing agent and international export manager for a local manufacturer of heating, ventilation and air conditioning products. We had a very profitable business exporting to the Mideast. Chinese companies copied our most profitable product, and we lost our lucrative Mideast business.
I’m all for competition; however, the playing field must be level. China’s government subsidies mean their companies can beat any competition.
