Regarding "New diploma rule" [News, Jan. 10], my disabled child is succeeding in the special education curriculum that New York State designated as appropriate for him. After 12 years of working at his capacity in the public school system, it is not right that he will not be able to receive a diploma with the rest of his graduating class.

New York State tells the parents of disabled children that the best education for them is to be found within their home district. They will tell you that there are many more opportunities in a public school versus a private school.

My disabled son is an active participant in all that takes place in his school. While his course of study is not as rigorous as that of my non-disabled child, a diploma represents the successful completion of the course of study prescribed.

Our disabled children face a lifetime of burdens. They are entitled to the joy of achievement all students earn when they are bestowed a diploma.
