Letter: Give homework, but don’t overdo it

This is in response to “Why I stopped assigning homework” by second-grade teacher Brandy Young [Opinion, Aug. 31].
Homework, like everything else, should have balance. Too much homework will overload students, while too little will not challenge them. Homework reinforces what was taught during the school day. It also gives parents the opportunity to see what is being taught to their children.
Homework gives students a chance to apply what they’ve learned on their own outside of school. Book reports or projects that children have a few weeks to complete are a good way to teach children to schedule their time.
Let students pick book reports or projects from a list, or choose their own books or projects. That would provide an opportunity for students to learn about something that interests them.
