Letter: Gov’t should help bury Pearl Harbor vet
I was moved by the Oct. 8 obituary “Raymond Haerry, USS Arizona sailor,” about one of the last survivors of the USS Arizona after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
It seems he carried that awful day with him for his remaining years. At the end of his long life at age 94, he said precisely where he wanted to be laid to rest: with his fellow sailors at Pearl Harbor.
His son said he will take his father’s ashes there when he can afford the trip. I found this so very disturbing. Why doesn’t our government step up and pay for this brave veteran to be buried with others at Pearl Harbor?
