To have two firefighters shot and killed responding to a fire is a tragedy on the same horrible level as the shootings in Newtown, Conn. ["Firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka mourned," News, Jan. 1].

The recurring theme is that these tragedies were carried out by unstable individuals who had illegally obtained firearms. William Spengler Jr. was a felon who was barred from legally possessing firearms, and Adam Lanza acquired his mother's legally owned firearms, which should certainly have been better secured.

Gun laws will not stop deranged people from acquiring firearms illegally. They will find a way. Gun control would only penalize the legal gun owner.

Too many people insist on blaming the firearms instead of the disturbed individuals who have no respect for the law.
