Letter: Low-cost medical care and drugs

I read "Expense of drugs takes toll" [News, April 2], about the prohibitive costs of medications for families with members who have life-threatening conditions.
People should know about the Partnership for Prescription Assistance (pparx.org). People can ask their pharmacy for the name of the company that makes a given medicine, and they can call the toll-free number on the website for that company. They can apply for help in paying for the medicine. Assistance is also provided in Spanish.
Very often, the companies claim they will provide monetary assistance so people of low income can obtain their medicine at no cost, or for just $5.
Catholic Church parish outreach organizations have helped community members with health care. One doesn't have to be a member of the church, just a local resident.
In addition, clinics funded by hospitals and Catholic Charities supply medications. They include St. Francis Hospital's Bishop McHugh Health Center in Hicksville, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and more.
