I was somewhat concerned by the opinion of Timothy G. Kremer, executive director of the New York State School Boards Association, when he singled out the cost per special education student versus students who attend general education ["Schools are drowning in mandates," Opinion, Jan. 10].

My son goes out of state to school because of his needs. It costs well above the $30,000 per year Kremer cited. Does he realize where these students might end up after high school if they did not have this funding?

Instead of pitting parents against school districts, there are many districts that work well and put the student first. When it comes to students with special needs, the cost to make them productive citizens should not be in the vocabulary of anyone interested in what is best for students.
