Requiring gun owners to lock up their weapons is just another piece of redundant legislation [“Require gun owners to secure weapons,” Letters, May 22].

If Nassau County Legis. Ellen Birnbaum (D-Great Neck) had bothered to read the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, she would know that it requires that guns be “securely locked” away from children.

Also, the Nassau County Police Department requires holders of pistol licenses to “safeguard firearms from unauthorized persons, especially children,” and for firearms to be stored in a locked receptacle.

Politicians need to focus on the real causes of crime, such as gangs, drugs, mental illness and illegal guns. Passing laws targeting law-abiding citizens does nothing.
